Lakefront Utilities Inc. Announces Advancement for Green Button Initiative
April 19th, 2022– Cobourg, ON – Lakefront Utilities Inc. (LUI) strives to encourage education, awareness, and sustainability, while promoting the advantages of Ontario’s digitization effort for Ontario utilities. As part of these efforts, Lakefront Utilities Inc. is furthering its steps to becoming Green Button ready. The Ontario Government’s implementation of Green Button will allow customers to securely access and share their energy consumption data, from their utility provider, with third parties. Green Button will offer consumers personalized ways to increase energy efficiencies, ultimately providing individuals and businesses with more choice surrounding their energy usage and electricity price plans. Having an open energy data market for Ontario will provide customers with information to decide which electricity price plan is most cost effective for their lifestyle.

In preparation of the implementation of Green Button applications, Lakefront will be taking part in the Green Button Open Energy Hackathon held virtually on April 23rd, 2022. Part of the larger GOOD Conference, from April 21st to 23rd, the hackathon aims to utilize local ingenuity and provide individuals with the opportunity to collaborate and address important questions. Such as, how do we take action to improve the health of our planet and overall human well-being? Using Lakefront’s Green Button toolset in a test environment, participants will have access to sample energy data (no real customer data will be included), to explore innovative ways energy data can be utilized and highlight future opportunities available for Ontarians. The Green Button Open Energy Hackathon encourages students and our community to generate creative, new ideas that will benefit individuals and businesses in Canada, furthering us in achieving the goal of improving the health of our environment.
