SHARE YOUR ENERGY DATA FOR RESEARCH

UEnergyHub - Empowering Ontario for a Greener Future through Unbiased Research

Are you an Ontario resident or business owner passionate about reducing energy costs and minimizing your environmental footprint? Are you willing to provide your utility energy data for research? Look no further! UEnergyHub is here to revolutionize the way we think about energy data research.

What Is UEnergyHub?

UEnergyHub, or University Energy Hub, is Canada’s first and only online energy data collection platform dedicated to unbiased research and education. It’s designed to empower you, the energy consumer, to participate in energy research activities, enabling us all to make informed decisions while supporting our education industry.

Who is UEnergyHub for?

The utility customer – The Ontario electric and natural gas utility customer (ratepayer) uses the platform to authorize their energy utility data so researchers can collect and reuse it for research. Once the energy user is registered in UEnergyHub, they can just pick their Utility from the list and get started. The platform also provides tools to view and retrieve the user’s own data in a simple-to-download format.

The Researcher – UEnergyHub provides a multi-utility and multi-energy user data Hub so the researcher can analyse data from multiple Utilities and energy users in Ontario easily. Also, the researcher can access this data for their research on an ongoing basis.

Here’s How It Works

The Utility accountholder authorizes the use of the data from the Utility.  UEnergyHub provides an easy-to-use interface and account authorization tracking tool to allow the user manage and share their data with the researcher.

Energy Data Donation Made Easy UEnergyHub allows electric and natural gas utility customers from most Ontario energy utilities to effortlessly donate utility data. By sharing your consumption and billing patterns, you contribute to cutting-edge research and educational initiatives.

Supporting University Research – It’s a Pilot Right Now for our inaugural UEnergyHub research. We have partnered with the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and a not-for-profit organization to launch UEnergyHub. This pilot is until October 2024. Your participation directly supports this vital research. Analyzing the authenticity of the data is the first step in ensuring that it becomes a trusted source for future research activities. More research from universities is on the way.

Reducing Costs and Emissions UEnergyHub isn’t just about data—it’s about action and education. By sharing energy data and understanding usage patterns, the education community can identify opportunities to reduce costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Let’s be honest, it’s going to take all of us working together to create a more sustainable future.

Project 1

Research Abstract on the existing UEnergyHub activities at UNB

The Ontario government has recently mandated that electric and natural gas utilities provide easy access to energy usage data so consumers can access energy-saving services in a competitive market. However, there has been no studies of how well utilities have implemented Green Button. More specifically, are regulatory requirements being met, and is data accurate, complete, and consistent with other available sources? This lack of scrutiny imperils Ontario’s efforts to decarbonize its economy because poor-quality data can inhibit clean energy solutions such as energy management, demand response, and virtual power plants. This project is the first to evaluate Ontario’s energy usage, billing, and account data quantitatively and qualitatively from utilities to benchmark performance objectively. In this project, we will develop a method to automatically identify, categorize, and resolve anomalies in energy consumption data using machine learning and data mining techniques. However, the application of machine learning takes significant resources and time, along with the labeled data, to train models, which is also very hard to obtain. This project seeks to minimize resource use and time by employing semi-supervised learning, in which we will evaluate several machine learning models. The findings from this study will apply to other provinces in Canada. Read our Case Study – UEnergyHub Canada An Energy Collection Data Hub for Research

Project 2

To validate energy bills and ensure the utilities are providing accurate bills and meter information. This will ensure energy users are getting accurate bills and are making informed decisions on their energy usage to minimize both their energy usage and energy costs.

Providing your data is easy and you can feel good about it.

EZGB: The Green Button Connector UEnergyHub leverages the power of EZGB, our cutting-edge Green Button Connector. What does this mean for you?

  • Seamless Data Access: EZGB simplifies the process of connecting utility data to UEnergyHub.
  • Real-Time Insights: EZGB provides real-time data updates, allowing both researchers and yourself to monitor your energy usage patterns and identify areas for improvement.
  • Utilizing commercial infrastructure: EZGB has been built to be used by the energy industry to manage utility access and deliver data.  The UEnergyHub will evolve over time because it’s part of a larger ecosystem.

Whether you’re a homeowner or a business, this information is invaluable for research and the outcomes of educational initiatives. Rest assured your data privacy is our top priority. EZGB adheres to strict security protocols, ensuring that your information remains confidential and is only accessible to authorized researchers on the active project.
